Tim Edey + Maxi Rai

Jelli Records and Trinity Community Arts Present Musician of the Year at BBC Folk Awards 2012

When 06/04/2014
from 19:30 to 23:00
Where Upstairs Hall

At just 32 years old, Tim Edey is the current BBC Radio Two Folk Musician of the Year and one half of the Best Duo 2012 award with harmonica guru Brendan Power.

Hailing from Broadstairs in Kent, Tim has played, toured and recorded both on record and TV with quite literally a who’s who of the Celtic and acoustic music scene. On the road worldwide since he was fifteen years old, he recorded his debut album at the age of seventeen, in Ireland, with his guru and legendary musician Steve Cooney producing.

His subsequent musical activities include playing with Anam, The Sharon Shannon Band, Lunasa, Julie Fowlis band, Session A9, Michael McGoldrick Band and Wolfstone, guesting and recording with JP Cormier and the legendary Barra MacNeils in Canada, guesting with Altan in Europe, Mary Black (RTE TV), playing with various Flook members, Magic of the Dance and a highly successful teaming with Seamus Begley Ireland’s accordion king resulting in an album “Disgrace Notes”, recording in 2011 on the new releases by Christy Moore “Folk Tale” and The Chieftains “Voice of ages”, and being probably the first Anglo-born musician to feature on a Christy Moore album!

Tim’s own solo albums (of which there are five) have been popular in Ireland and the UK as well as Europe. Touring in Austria to standing ovations with his Collective trio in 2011 was one career highlight, another was playing the legendary Celtic Colours festival in Canada in 2011 – where he also recorded a duo album with multi-award winning Canadian artist JP Cormier (due out late 2012).

Playing more than eight instruments to a virtuoso standard, Tim mainly uses the Melodeon and button accordeon and nylon strung guitar. He now also adds being a rather shy but fine voiced singer to the stage.

“Tim Edey is an incredibly gifted and talented musician… and the nicest guy in the world” Sharon Shannon

“if that’s not good stuff, I don’t know what is…” Mike Harding BBC, Radio Two

“There are no words in the English dictionary that can quite describe the reaction to Tim Edey’s music. Tim takes our breath away with his musicianship and joie-de-vivre!”. Peter Arnold – Jurassic folk, Devon

“A quite staggering display of virtuoso musicianship in the form of BBC2 Folk Awards 2012 double winner Tim Edey” Richie Evans, music promoter.

When 22/02/2014
from 19:30 to 23:00

Meet Your Feet, Minke Whales & Wolfhound

Bristol ‘s very own 9-piece women’s band  have recently released  their first EP in 20 years following their reformation. Now signed to Jelli Records, Meet Your Feet will be performing tracks from the “Unfinished Business” EP at the Trinity, Bristol on Saturday 22nd February.
People who remember the band and who have seen their fantastic recent gig at the Thekla will know of their infectious music based on funk, soul, jazz, Latin and pop influences.
The band was originally formed in 1987 and quickly became one of Bristol ’s top bands. Meet Your Feet have a fantastic track record including several European tours and gigs at all the prestigious festivals such as WOMAD and Glastonbury.

The 9-piece will be playing their original, highly danceable music at the Trinity. The songs are dynamic with tight harmonies, catchy sax riffs, infectious percussion and spot-on lyrics, making it almost impossible to stop your feet from dancing.

And of course, the EP itself will be on sale at the gig.

Meet Your Feet will be joined by The Minke Whales , a Bristol five-piece formed in 2009 by Edinburgh singer songwriter Stuart Reid (formerly of Shifty Disco Record’s band, Seagull Strange), bassist Neil Hughes, banjo player Tim Moore, drummer Chris Mapp and latterly singer Elle Ashwell when they discovered their collective love of recording music in allotment potting sheds.

Down a Cornish slate mine and at the Chelsea Flower Show” and now adding The Trinity Centre to the list this is one not to miss.

Banks

Live Nation presents rising LA electronic soul singer, keyboardist and songwriter

When 20/03/2014
19:00 to 23:00

Banks

+ special guest

BANKS will be making her live return to the UK for a debut headline tour in March.

The last few weeks have seen the Los Angeles singer-songwriter and self-taught pianist tipped by everyone from the BBC Sound of 2014, MTV, Spotify and all the way to Shazam and UK Blog Sound of 2014, further testament that the excitement with BANKS as one of the years most promising new artists is truly across the board.

The Guardian’s new band of the day back in July, described Banks as “less reticent, more robust, less wispily idiosyncratic” than other “ethereal R&B females”. With a deeper voice “she does sultry and mature/sophisticated woman rather than distracted laptop girl (she loves Fiona Apple, Lauryn Hill, Tracy Chapman: “Anybody with grit and crunch in their voice”). The voice is higher in the mix, but it’s not high. And although she’s singing – huskily – over beats, they’re not quite as blown as SZA’s or Phlo’s. This is straighter stuff: more Jessie Ware than Jessy Lanza”.

BANKS critically lauded London EP (the title owing to the city it was written and recorded in) released in September has won her an ever-growing legion of supporters and fans as it further established her distinct sound – a place where sparse clicky beats, wiry basslines, mercurial synths, confessional lyrics, and seductive melodies coalesce. Supporting the Weeknd on tour in the US and UK, the end of the year has seen her grace stages as sizeable as Radio City Music Hall in New York to the 02 Arena in London. A one off headline London show at Shoreditch Town Hall sold out in a head spinning two hours.
