He is a recipient of 6 honorary doctorates from British universities, is a fellow of LIPA and the Southbank University, an Associate of Sadler’s Wells, sits on the board for London’s Somerset House and in 2007 turned down an OBE for ethical reasons.

The Twinkle Brothers Live

Saturday 12th December 2015

Trinity Centre, Cristol City, BS2 0NW

The Twinkle Brothers were formed in 1962 by brothers Norman (vocals, drums) and Ralston Grant (vocals, rhythm guitar) from Falmouth, Jamaica. The band was expanded with the addition of Eric Barnard (piano), Karl Hyatt (vocals, percussion), and Albert Green (congas, percussion).

After winning local talent competitions, they recorded their first single, “Somebody Please Help Me,” in 1966 for producer Leslie Kong. This was followed by sessions for other top Jamaican producers such as Duke Reid, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Sid Bucknor, Phil Pratt, and Bunny Lee. The band worked in the late 1960s and early 1970s on the island’s hotel circuit, playing a mixture of calypso, soul, pop, and soft reggae, and in the early 1970s, they began producing their own recordings. Their debut album, Rasta Pon Top, was released in 1975, featuring strongly-Rastafari-orientated songs such as “Give Rasta Praise” and “Beat Them Jah Jah”.

As well as producing Twinkle Brothers work, Norman Grant also produced other artists since the mid-1970s, including several albums by E.T. Webster. In 1977, the band were signed to Virgin Records’ Frontline label, leading to the release of the Love, Praise Jah, and Countrymen albums. When the band were dropped by Virgin Records in the early 1980s, Norman Grant moved to the United Kingdom, and carried on effectively as a solo artist, but still using the Twinkle Brothers name, and continued with regular releases well into the 2000s, mainly on his own Twinkle label.

Since the early 1990s Twinkle Brothers have been regularly collaborating with the Polish band Trebunie-Tutki in which they fuse reggae and traditional music from the Tatra Mountains. An analysis of this collaboration can be found in the popular world music textbook, Worlds of Music and in more detail in the musical ethnography Making Music in the Polish Tatras.

She Called Me Mother

She Called Me Mother

by Michelle Inniss, directed by Cara Nolan, starring Cathy Tyson

When she gon come? I lookin at de people dem but I can’t see her. She a pretty lookin ting, she does stan’ out amongst these faces dripped in dissatisfaction…

Evangeline is waiting; she has been waiting a long time. She waits for the Black Swan to glide through the station and show her a little warmth and kindness. She waits for a ticket home to Trinidad, the sun, the mango trees, and the street vendors selling curry. She waits for Shirley the daughter she let walk away all those years ago.

I try not to tink about she too much, ’cause de pain dem thoughts bring it like a heard of buffalo runnin wild in a field, an I beneath dem foot.

Will her daughter ever return to her and can she ever forgive the Mother that let her go?

She Called Me Mother invites the audience into the life of Evangeline Gardner – a homeless, 70 year old Afro-Caribbean woman, who finds herself living on the streets. The play brings together Evangeline and her estranged daughter Shirley and is written in poetic Trinidadian vernacular rarely heard on our stages.

She Called Me Mother stars BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee Cathy Tyson, best known for her stage work with the RSC and the Liverpool Everyman and on film in Mona Lisa (1986)

She called me Mother is written in poetic Trindadian vernacular rarely heard on British stages.

“I believe She Called Me Mother has the potential to be a modern classic. We are going into territory that hasn’t been explored on our stages before. The emotional potential of the play is boundless. I hope this play will be a rewarding experience for our audience and all those with creative involvement.” (Cathy Tyson actor/producer)

This debut show from Pitch Lake Productions, founded by actor Cathy Tyson, writer Michelle Inniss and director Cara Nolan will be the second show to tour for the Black Theatre Live consortium, dedicated to bringing inventive BAME theatre to venues across the country. It follows the recently concluded tour of Tara Arts new version of Macbeth.

“I’m delighted that our consortium have selected such an exciting prospect for our first commission. The poetry of the script blew me away” (Sarah Brigham, Artistic Director Derby)

Teachings In Dub – Peng Sound Special

Teachings In Dub – Peng Sound Special

Regulars at Teachings in Dub will remember our Peng Sound special at the beginning of the year – straight fire!  Well, as when playing a 7″ vinyl disc; after Part I must come Part II…

OSSIA feat. Rankin Snoopy

Peng Sound Records bossman, Ossia, is a militant purveyor of vinyl whether it be in the dancehall, via his various record labels, or his jointly run online record store; RwdFwd. His Peng Sound nights began in the infamous Take 5 Cafe on Stokes Croft, underground and grass-roots they (and of course the label) have always showcased artists and music that Ossia is 100% behind.   Joined by Bristol Reggae don Rankin Snoopy (Unique Star), their debut set at Teachings is set to be packed full of dubplate gems and original deejay lyrical niceness!

ISHAN SOUND feat. Rider Shafique

His 2013 debut release on Peng Sound caught the attention of vinyl buyers around the globe, deep and dread with Ras Addis on vocals.  Ishan has since had releases on the wonderful Zam Zam in the US, Pinch’s world renowned Tectonic Recordings, not to mention his eight track double vinyl EP back on Peng earlier this year.  Hard-hitting minimal dubwise is what we have come to expect from Ishan, his material has been strongly supported by fellow Peng Sound artists Dubkasm and Gorgon Sound and continues to tear up dances world wide.  Although known for cutting dubplates Ishan has also recently launched his ‘live’ set where he dubs his material on the spot, spontaneous mixes in real time.  This is what we have in store for us at the next chapter of Teachings and with the ever-conscious Rider Shafique joining him on the microphone we already know Ishan is going to come heavy like lead!

IRATION STEPPAS SOUNDSYSTEM

You know a sound system is top of the game when they run a special, and the whole crowd cheer at the first bar. The mighty Iration Steppas, an unstoppable force outta Leeds, have been tearing up dances for over 20 years now, and they definitely know how to shake the room. With Mark Iration at the I-trols, selection comes from the top draw each and every time. They get the perfect balance between lost gems, forward thinking dubwise and a whole heap of dubplates and specials. Their hard work and professionalism is very much to thank for the spread of reggae music and for pushing it forward to newer heights. They’ll be joined by the mighty Danman on the mic always ready and prepared to chant down Babylon with his righteous Rastaman lyrical vibration.  Running dubs inna year 3000 style into the night; if you didn’t know by now, Iration Steppas are the general!

Cannonballista Workshop

Cannonballista is the explosive new show from live artist Liz Clarke. It’s a highly charged concoction of live art, installation and socially engaged performance taking place at Trinity this July.

Part installation, part workshop programme, part intrigue, Liz will invite local women to engage in three day-long workshops sharing her making processes and practices. They will discover participants’ individual Super Hero Alter Ego- or the parts of themselves that are extraordinary, untapped and unexpected. The work is inspired by ordinary women living extraordinary lives, their struggles and every day triumphs they notch up.

It brings together mundane drudgery, sheds, cannons and neon blue in a way that has never been seen before!

Liz has had over 15 years experience of working with women experiencing isolation, depression and other issues creating diverse and varied performance work. People with or without experience of mental health issues are encouraged to apply.

The workshops will take place at Trinity on Thursday 8th, Friday 9th & Saturday 10th July. 10am-4.30pm.
