Hurray for the Riff Raff – Live Tonight @Trinity Centre,

Image

American folk-blues and Americana band from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Channelling Patti Smith, Woody Guthrie, 70s New York punk and Puerto Rican rhythms, Hurray for the Riff Raff return with a “heady sonic gumbo,” (NME). In their latest, critically-acclaimed album ‘Navigator’, frontwoman Alynda Segarra explores her Bronx/Puerto Rican roots with typical smoky vocals and finely-tuned lyrics to deliver songs that “just flow – slinky, sad or elegant in their own ways.” (Guardian).

Performing at Bristol’s Trinity Centre, expect an irresistible blend of stories and sounds from a band that “reclaims folk’s protest roots and marries them to the sounds of the Caribbean” (Pitchfork).

In The Mood For Love: Outdoor Cinema

Trinity & Come the Revolution bring together a double bill of classic films, food and music over two nights

Described as one of the greatest films of the 2000’s In the Mood for Love (original title Faa yeung nin wa), set in the early 1960s, is the story of two neighbours, a woman and a man, who form a strong bond after both suspect their spouses of extramarital activities.

While they find themselves increasingly attracted to each other, they refuse to give in to their feelings so as not to commit similar wrongs… but the passion is so tempting.

With its exquisite colour costume, poise and tone Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love will linger in the memory like a perfect kiss.

Michael Galasso’s incredible score will be preceded by live music from Hokkett;

A trio of flute, violin and baritone sax. Skronky / wonky riffs, snippets of melodies and hints of harmonies, woven together through improvisation. Hokkett take the space between them, using it as an extra member – stretching the silence out before crushing it flat with kneejerk riffs and torn rhythms.

Tina Hitchens – Flute, Yvonna Magda – Violin, Helen Papaioannou – Baritone Sax.

Film duration: 1hr 38Min

Doors, food and our outside bar open from 7pm

Live music from 7.30pm

Film due to start at 8pm (when the sun sets!)

Benjamin Zephaniah & The Revolutionary Minds

Benjamin Zephaniah & The Revolutionary Minds

Pioneering dub poet, writer, social commentator and music maker has teamed up with renowned producer & engineer, The Sea

Benjamin Zephaniah, pioneering dub poet, writer, social commentator and music maker has teamed up with renowned producer & engineer, The Sea (Toots & The Maytals, Rodney P, Massive Attack,The Wailers, Buju Banton) & created the incredibly timely album, Revolutionary Minds.

As a live Entity, the five strong Revolutionary Minds expertly provide rich, upbeat, hypnotic dub rhythms behind Benjamin’s beloved vocal and lyrical mastery. Amongst these backing vocals are supplied by Amy True, an artist in her own right she is fast becoming one of the most influential and talked about personalities in the UK Hip Hop scene, being equally formidable in both her ability to sing, and her ability to deliver fast paced gritty lyricism. Revolutionary Minds as a body of work tackles the indigestible topic of the world we live in today, political & economic corruption, global warming, rampant racism, fascist patriarchy…unfortunately we could go on & on.

Amid this chaos though Revolutionary Minds, both band and album, are the soundtrack for the modern revolutionist; it will make you feel empowered, hopeful, galvanised to make a difference and make you dance; it’s a dub thing.

Presented as part of Trinity’s in-house Autumn Programme

Smerin’s Anti-Social Club, The Carny Villains and DJ Dad

Smerin’s Anti-Social Club, The Carny Villains and DJ Dad join forces for a monster party

Smerins Anti-Social Club

Smerin’s are back with a new album. Yes that’s right… a NEW ALBUM!!! ‘Jelly Deals’ is due for release in late April and to celebrate the occasion we’ve lined up a massive launch party at Bristol’s Trinity Centre on Friday 12th May.
For the uninitiated, Smerin’s Anti-Social Club have been firing up festival crowds and gig-goers across the land for the past 15 years with their inimitable blend of brass-heavy funk, swing, rock, drum ‘n’ bass, and ska. Although they’ve made ripples on the radio with releases such as their infamous dub rendition of the Doctor Who theme featuring killer vocals of the late great Tenor Fly, and thrilled fans with the willfully schizophonic self-released Primordial Cordial LP, it’s their enviable reputation as a live act that has long been winning this 8-piece band appearances at the country’s top festivals.

The Carny Villains

We’re honoured to have our friends and sure-fire party starters The Carny Villains join us on the lineup. They’ve gone from strength to strength since they took Bristol by storm at the Invisible Circus’s legendary Carny Ville events, and we can’t wait to see what they been up to in the studio over the Winter months.

Known for their raucous blend of stomping swing, ska and Balkan-style folk played with the riotous energy of punk rock, The Carny Villains enigmatic and animated live shows are are always something to behold, punctuated by off the wal theatrics, humour and showmanship.

Dj Dad

Bristol’s one and only DJ Dad will keep things flowing with his seemingly endless collection of great tunes.
