Seun Kuti – This show is now at The Fleece

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. At the age of nine, Seun expressed the wish to sing to his father. A short while later Seun started performing with his father and the band, until his father’s untimely death in 1997. Seun, then only 14-years-old, assumed the role as lead singer of Egypt 80. Ever since, Seun has followed the political and social ethos of his father. Along the way, he began to add his own twist to the music, digging deep into various African traditions to reflect the continent’s struggles and cultures. About three-quarters of the current Egypt 80 line-up consists of musicians that not only played with Fela Kuti, but often were arrested and harassed alongside the founder of the Afrobeat movement. Seun Kuti has toured the world and previously released three critically acclaimed albums as well as last year’s Struggle Sounds EP.

About Uchenna Dance

The Company

Uchenna Dance is based in London, UK. It was formed in January 2009 under the vision and leadership of Vicki Igbokwe, shortly after she experienced a life-changing trip to New York during the summer of 2008. It was a Wednesday evening and Vicki had just finished taking a house dance class at Peridance Studios and had been told about a club called Sin Sin, that had a house night called Soulgasam. It hit her that this dance she was falling in love with, house dance, was much more than just a style of dance, it was a culture, a way of life. The DJ was spinning some tunes and the dancers were killing it…

The Uchenna dance style fuses Waacking, Vogue and House with traditional African and Contemporary, creating a signatory aesthetic that simply is, Uchenna.

Uchenna (pronounced OO-CHENNA) offers a unique and contemporary addition to the UK dance scene.

Since its inception, Uchenna Dance has grown from an informal explorative company to a tour de force within the dance sector.

The company’s overarching aim is to Empower, Entertain and Educate through dance in a diverse programme that includes the production of dance theatre production experiences, coaching, dance based empowerment workshops and teaching in further and higher education.

Notes for Notes Appeal

Notes for Notes appeal aims to raise £20,000 towards a £500,000 Conservation Project to repair the much-loved Trinity Centre

For every every £5 raised for the Notes for Notes appeal, Trinity will exchange one musical note.

Once we reach our target we will launch ‘the Trinity Anthem’ – a unique piece of music, created by Adrian Utley & John Parish, to celebrate the diverse musical heritage of the centre and city of Bristol.

Each year The Trinity Centre is used by over 60,000 people, providing over 3000 hours of free and subsidised space for community activities.

We hope that people who hold Trinity close to their hearts will support the Conservation Project and help us raise vital funds to help secure the centre’s future.
