Groundswell Rising Film Screening

Come and see this moving film on fracking and meet the executive producer..
Mark Lichty from Pennsylvania in the USA will be in Bristol for a screening of Groundswell Rising, a documentary about fracking in America and the social movement which has emerged from affected communities. It is informative, daunting, inspiring and hopeful all at once. Mark is the film’s executive producer and will be in England on a nine day tour.

Mark has long been involved in issues of social justice and change through organizations such as Common Cause, Project for Nuclear Awareness and others. He is an attorney and a former CEO of Bustin Industrial Products. He used to believe gas was a solution to future energy needs and spent tens of thousands of dollars converting his plant to gas, and had no issues with fracking at that time. When he subsequently became involved with the research for the Groundswell Rising film, he changed his position completely. He now believes fracking is the major issue of our times and, due to the health and environmental consequences, is a moral issue as well.

This is a great opportunity to come and find out more about fracking and hear first hand from someone who has lived side by side with the industry and has documented people taking charge of defending their communities against its inherent dangers. There will also be a chance to find out about the situation in the UK as fracking licences have been issued in many areas including in North Somerset, quite close to Bristol.

Khruangbin – Highly rated Trio

Taking influence from 1960’s Thai funk – their name literally translates to “Engine Fly” in Thai – the Texan trio Khruangbin is formed of Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums. Their debut album ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspiration, Tarantino soundtracks and surf-rock cool.

We feel like there is an ease that comes from being immersed in a space, away from the distractions of the city and everyday life. We make our music in a barn, in the Texas hill country, because it makes sense to us. Being there allows us to make music that comes naturally, and that’s what we wanted this album to be. We wanted to make a record that just let the music happen, and we hope that’s what you can hear.”

‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside where their first rehearsals took place. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favorites were 60s and 70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock and funk. This had a heavy impact on the direction of the band, the scales they used and the inflection of the melodies; which coupled with the spaciousness of the Texan countryside culminated in Khruangbin forming their exotic, individual sound.

“If you like the idea of soundtrack music that might not sound out of place in a Tarantino movie, some wistful soul and slow-motion funk with an exotic ambience that offers hints of countries as far-flung as Hawaii and Japan, then you need some Khruangbin in your life.” The Guardian

“There’s a long history of UK musicians stamping their own identity on Jamaican sounds…Resonators proudly carry the tradition forwards, adding a distinctly British aesthetic to Dubwise production and also infusing elements from the Bass Music explosion that’s revitalised the lower end of the sonic spectrum in recent years”

Mercury Music Prize Recommends

“British reggae at its best”
“…elements are truly beautiful and haunting. In these days of homogenised, digital recordings lacking in any individual sound or identity it is most encouraging to hear something so truly original…most refreshing.”

David Rodigan

“Known for their infectious high energy and positive vibe…” The Pope
