David Rodigan speaks to Alborosie, the boy from Sicily who made his home in Jamaica.
They talk about his unique sound, which he developed while working at Geejam’s studio in Portland,
why you have to go to Jamaica to really experience dancehall, and his collection of vintage sound equipment.

Plus the Rodigan Scorcher is from Tarrus Riley, and we enter the Echo Chamber with Sly & Robbie.

Ujima Radio currently off air

Statement from Ujima Radio CIC Board of Directors about Ujima Radio currently being off air. Thursday 13 March 2014
index
We regret to announce that Ujima Radio 98FM is currently off air until a situation entirely out of our control can be resolved.
index
On Tuesday 11 March, at 13.00, the power supply to Ujima House, where the Ujima Studio is, was cut off. The landlords, Ceed Ltd, have not been paying the utility bills, despite the fact that Ujima Radio are fully up to date with all rent and rate payments.

Ujima House is owned by Bristol City Council but leased to a company, Ceed Ltd, who act as landlords, renting the space to us. Ujima Radio have been paying rent and rates to the landlords, but, according to the court warden, the utility bills have not been paid for a long time.

We are calling on Bristol City Council, as owners of Ujima House, to intervene and ensure that power is reinstated to the building so that Ujima Radio, and the other community organisations that rent space in the building, can operate again.

We are asking all friends and listeners of Ujima Radio to join us at 10:00am on Friday 14th March in front of the station, to take a stand, show their support and urge the Council to take responsibility for their building and resolve the situation.

A vital community service has been taken away and we need to ensure that it is now restored.

Please ensure you turn up with as many people as possible and make our voice be heard in celebration of Ujima Radio.

For further information and interviews please contact Roger Griffith, Chair of Ujima Radio on 07770-266311.

Meet Your Feet

Bristol’s very own 9-piece funk, soul, jazz women’s band

When 22/02/2014
from 19:30 to 23:00

Meet Your Feet, Minke Whales & Wolfhound

Bristol ‘s very own 9-piece women’s band  have recently released  their first EP in 20 years following their reformation. Now signed to Jelli Records, Meet Your Feet will be performing tracks from the “Unfinished Business” EP at the Trinity, Bristol on Saturday 22nd February.
People who remember the band and who have seen their fantastic recent gig at the Thekla will know of their infectious music based on funk, soul, jazz, Latin and pop influences.
The band was originally formed in 1987 and quickly became one of Bristol ’s top bands. Meet Your Feet have a fantastic track record including several European tours and gigs at all the prestigious festivals such as WOMAD and Glastonbury.

The 9-piece will be playing their original, highly danceable music at the Trinity. The songs are dynamic with tight harmonies, catchy sax riffs, infectious percussion and spot-on lyrics, making it almost impossible to stop your feet from dancing.

And of course, the EP itself will be on sale at the gig.

Meet Your Feet will be joined by The Minke Whales , a Bristol five-piece formed in 2009 by Edinburgh singer songwriter Stuart Reid (formerly of Shifty Disco Record’s band, Seagull Strange), bassist Neil Hughes, banjo player Tim Moore, drummer Chris Mapp and latterly singer Elle Ashwell when they discovered their collective love of recording music in allotment potting sheds.

British Sea Power

“In 2013, ten years on from their debut album, British Sea Power are hitting their stride. New album Machineries Of Joy is a creative high, a superbly composed, multi-stylistic tour de force. Beautifully mechanised rhythms sits alongside wind-blasted Bronte-rock cinematics. Brain-bent garage thrash hurtles in.

BSP have played numerous striking shows: atop the Great Wall Of China and at London’s Natural History Museum. At Jodrell Bank and at London’s Czech Embassy. On the Scilly Isles and on Arctic islets. Down a Cornish slate mine and at the Chelsea Flower Show” and now adding The Trinity Centre to the list this is one not to miss.
