Teachings In Dub – Peng Sound Special

Teachings In Dub – Peng Sound Special

Regulars at Teachings in Dub will remember our Peng Sound special at the beginning of the year – straight fire!  Well, as when playing a 7″ vinyl disc; after Part I must come Part II…

OSSIA feat. Rankin Snoopy

Peng Sound Records bossman, Ossia, is a militant purveyor of vinyl whether it be in the dancehall, via his various record labels, or his jointly run online record store; RwdFwd. His Peng Sound nights began in the infamous Take 5 Cafe on Stokes Croft, underground and grass-roots they (and of course the label) have always showcased artists and music that Ossia is 100% behind.   Joined by Bristol Reggae don Rankin Snoopy (Unique Star), their debut set at Teachings is set to be packed full of dubplate gems and original deejay lyrical niceness!

ISHAN SOUND feat. Rider Shafique

His 2013 debut release on Peng Sound caught the attention of vinyl buyers around the globe, deep and dread with Ras Addis on vocals.  Ishan has since had releases on the wonderful Zam Zam in the US, Pinch’s world renowned Tectonic Recordings, not to mention his eight track double vinyl EP back on Peng earlier this year.  Hard-hitting minimal dubwise is what we have come to expect from Ishan, his material has been strongly supported by fellow Peng Sound artists Dubkasm and Gorgon Sound and continues to tear up dances world wide.  Although known for cutting dubplates Ishan has also recently launched his ‘live’ set where he dubs his material on the spot, spontaneous mixes in real time.  This is what we have in store for us at the next chapter of Teachings and with the ever-conscious Rider Shafique joining him on the microphone we already know Ishan is going to come heavy like lead!

IRATION STEPPAS SOUNDSYSTEM

You know a sound system is top of the game when they run a special, and the whole crowd cheer at the first bar. The mighty Iration Steppas, an unstoppable force outta Leeds, have been tearing up dances for over 20 years now, and they definitely know how to shake the room. With Mark Iration at the I-trols, selection comes from the top draw each and every time. They get the perfect balance between lost gems, forward thinking dubwise and a whole heap of dubplates and specials. Their hard work and professionalism is very much to thank for the spread of reggae music and for pushing it forward to newer heights. They’ll be joined by the mighty Danman on the mic always ready and prepared to chant down Babylon with his righteous Rastaman lyrical vibration.  Running dubs inna year 3000 style into the night; if you didn’t know by now, Iration Steppas are the general!

Cannonballista Workshop

Cannonballista is the explosive new show from live artist Liz Clarke. It’s a highly charged concoction of live art, installation and socially engaged performance taking place at Trinity this July.

Part installation, part workshop programme, part intrigue, Liz will invite local women to engage in three day-long workshops sharing her making processes and practices. They will discover participants’ individual Super Hero Alter Ego- or the parts of themselves that are extraordinary, untapped and unexpected. Participants will be invited to play their own unique part in the final show.

The work is inspired by ordinary women living extraordinary lives, their struggles and every day triumphs they notch up.

It brings together mundane drudgery, sheds, cannons and neon blue in a way that has never been seen before!

Liz has had over 15 years experience of working with women experiencing isolation, depression and other issues creating diverse and varied performance work. People with or without experience of mental health issues are encouraged to apply.

The workshops will take place at Trinity on Thursday 8th, Friday 9th & Saturday 10th July. 10am-4.30pm.

The performances will be on Friday 17th & Saturday 18th July.

Songstress Terri Walker Live at The Gallimaufry. FOC.

Hi All,

The brilliant Terri Walker will be in Bristol for a show at The Gallimaufry on Gloucester Rd, Cristol BRISTOL on Tuesday 16th June, performing a stripped back intimate version of her new album “Entitled” (because after this many years in the biz quite frankly she is!!!). Alongside Terri will be Bristol boy Jay Wilcox.

Entrance is FREE and all are welcome.

Terri dropped her critically acclaimed debut album ‘Untitled’ in 2003 – featuring a
collaboration with Mos Def – and was nominated for the Mercury Prize and four MOBO awards. Second album ‘LOVE’ pulled in positive reviews and third album ‘I Am’ won fans in The Guardian and BBC, with some claiming it crystallized her position as one of the UK’s leading artists. Following an exhausting tour, Terri took a hiatus from music, questioning the industry, its output and the perception of her as an artist.
“I always thought, ‘I’m a singer, that’s all I want’, but I have stories to tell, people to
inspire, people who feel like I once felt. I’m not just a singer. I’m an artist.” .

Earl Sweatshirt

Odd Future rapper/producer’s ‘Not Ready 2 Leave’ tour.

Earl Sweatshirt

+ Ratking

Far skilled beyond his years, Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt is arguably the main reason the group was catapulted to global demand back in 2010. With impeccable wordplay, dense rhythms and effortless melodies layered in humbling texture, it’s crazy to think Earl Sweatshirt has just turned 21. On his Chum LP, the OFWGKTA trophy piece displays grade-A lyricism in brilliantly dark fashion that you’d only associate with hip-hop’s elite. With talent so boisterous and music so innovative, it’s scary to think the course Earl Sweatshirt is on right now. On 2nd June he headlines The Trinity Centre in Bristol, you know what to do.

Presented by Metropolis and Live Nation.

This is a 14+ event. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.

Winner of ‘Best Metropolitan Festival’ at UK Festival Awards 2013
‘Dot to Dot offers a unique experience for festival-goers and artists alike’ – efestivals
‘With a stunning bill and venues within yards of one another we’ll leave you to join the dots’ – Clash

Dot To Dot Festival is established as the UKs premier festival for unearthing the hottest new talent around, alongside established acts from all over the globe. 2015 marks the festival’s 10th year and will see it returning to Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham from the 22nd to 24th May. Dot To Dot’s ever eclectic line-up is set to make this landmark year the biggest and best in the festival’s history.

With lots of exciting announcements to follow, this is just the first wave of artists to play this year’s Festival:

Following a stand out set at last year’s festival, headlining this year’s festival will be Saint Raymond, Nottingham’s latest success story. It’s been an incredible year for the singer-songwriter, which has seen him embark on an arena tour with Ed Sheeran as well as a take on a sell-out headline tour of his own. Twenty-one year old Rae Morris also joins the festival in Manchester and Nottingham following a sold out UK tour and top 10 critically acclaimed album “Unguarded’. Irish pop folk duo Hudson Taylor, comprising of brothers Harry and Alfie join the bill, along with The Wytches who bring their blend of critically acclaimed surf-psych to the festival. Also joining Dot To Dot 2015 are Canadian punk-rock band Single Mothers and New York based indie-rockers, Cymbals Eat Guitars.

Glaswegian duo Honeyblood bring their brand of grunge-pop to the festival alongside the folk infused Haim-esque harmonies from Australian trio Little May and Hinds (formerly known as Deers), the garage rock up and comers from Madrid. Laura Doggett (whose music you may recognise from ITV Series Broadchurch) will also perform with her distinctive soulful sound along with the hotly tipped pop fuzz of Menace Beach. Further along the line up, Dot To Dot fans can expect to hear sensual R&B pop courtesy of Brooklyn based singer Tei Shi, atmospheric indie sounds from Racing Glaciers and 4-piece Welsh rock band Pretty Vicious who’ll perform their angsty anthems at the Bristol and Nottingham dates. The full line-up also features Alex Burey’s tenderly emotional pop music, the ‘80s infused electro pop of April Towers and the playful bohemian indie tunes of Vitamin as well as many, many more incredible acts yet to be announced!

Dot To Dot Organiser Anton Lockwood (of DHP Family) said: ‘We’re very excited to be celebrating our 10th birthday here at Dot To Dot and can’t wait to bring the festival back to Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham! We’re proud of the reputation we’ve developed over the last 10 years for promoting new, up and coming talent by giving artists their first chance in front of a festival crowd, and this year’s line-up is no different. Having seen so many previous Dot To Dot artists become huge successes in recent years
we can’t wait to watch some of the emerging talent that the music scene has to offer at this year’s festival. This announcement is only the start of it!’

Previous Dot to Dot line-ups have seen performances from The xx, Mumford and Sons, The 1975, London Grammar, Jake Bugg, SBTKRT, The Cribs, Peace and many, many more. With the emphasis on showcasing the hottest new talent on the planet, there will be lots more exciting additions to be announced for Dot To Dot’s 2015 line-up.
