Time to showcase the labels and artists!
We’ve had an amazing year here at TID, with a series of road block events spreading the message of reggae music to the people of Bristol and beyond. From youths coming to their first dance to the already converted, it’s been a pleasure to see the love and support of so many, coming to our events and creating such a great vibe each and every time. We’ve played host to the finest sound systems around, with Iration Steppas, King Earthquake, Kibir La Amlak, Mungo’s Hifi and Maasai Warrior all gracing the Trinity Centre with their unique and individual styles. Special moments also came from the guests on these sounds and we give thanks to the Classic Wonder Veterans, Dub Boy and Tenja, the mighty Aba Shanti I, Dubkasm and of course, Dub Judah. For this last one of the year, we would like to pay tribute to the labels, who create the music that the sound systems and selectors love to play. We’re very excited to welcome two of the best current UK reggae labels, alongside one of our favourite Bristol sound systems, and give them all the chance to play their music in the dance. Roots Garden with Earl 16 and Mc Trooper
Since forming in 2005, Roots Garden have never failed to impress. Every release has hit all over the world, with selectors soon realising that this label was one to watch. Based in Brighton, they work hard, not just on their immaculate productions but also ruling the Brighton reggae club night scene, and hosting their own radio show on totally radio. Their music has a great variety to it, taking influence from a range of reggae and dub styles, from ska to deep roots and soundsystem stepper’s. They have always created forward thinking reggae music, with creative takes on old styles keeping the scene fresh. They have worked with a ridiculous amount of talented vocalists and musicians, and for this night they will be joined by two of the best. Mc Trooper outta London, always conscious and humble but with the lyrical ability to nice up any dance. They will also be joined by the legendary Earl 16, a veteran of the scene, both in Jamaica and the UK. His experience is tremendous, having worked extensively with everyone from Joe Gibbs, to Mikey Dread, to Mad Professor to Dreadzone. It’s going to be a treat for sure. Tuff Scout with Reality Souljahs
Fresher to the shelves but just as crucial to the UK reggae record label business are UK digital dub master Gil Cang, and Jake Travis, aka Tuff Scout. Born out of one of London’s best record stores, Out On The Floor, in Camden Town, the label has gone from strength to strength since 2011, and now have many reggae record collectors waiting on their every release. Similarly to Roots Garden, they do not limit themselves to one particular sound and have always had one eye on the roots music they grew up with, and one eye firmly on the dancefloor. Tuff Scout releases are well known to lively up the dance with their upbeat tempo and energetic versions. For this session they will be joined by Reality Souljahs, the incredibly talented duo whose highly spiritual harmonies have gained them huge popularity all over Europe. They’ll be hungry to showcase their work at Teachings and alongside Tuff Scout we’re sure it’ll be special. Kibir La Amlak with Mulu and Donovan Kingjay
Providing their beautiful sound system for the night are Kibir La Amlak. Having gained a lot of respect in a very short time, they are now up there with the best sound systems in the world and play all over Europe regularly. They never fail to impress as a sound system with their rootikal vibes. They too, have made an impact on the record business, with top releases on their own labels and a lot of talent when it comes to production. They are also very aware of the power of live music and work with many talented singers and players of instruments, recently preparing a full live show. For this chapter, they’ll be joined by the wonderful Mulu, a rising star of Bristol reggae, whose voice and energy have led to a lot of well deserved attention. They’ll also be joined by Donovan Kingjay, who has impressed on many sound systems and labels and is another star of the ever expanding UK reggae music scene.
All in all, it’s set to be a top quality night with music from across the reggae spectrum and a rare chance to see so much talent in one room. It’s time for the labels and artists to showcase their music!
We are about to open our doors for the final chapter of 2014 and we can’t wait.
We love soundsystem culture and it has been our pleasure to host many of the finest sounds around in our arena. Seeing as this session is the last for the year we wanted to offer something slightly different but very special. We are very pleased to be able to bring to Bristol two of our favourite independent record labels: ROOTS GARDEN and TUFF SCOUT!
Both these imprints have put out a stream of hard-hitting releases that’s caught the attention of the reggae world. Working with legendary artists from Jamaica as well as new talent from the UK both have become known as some of the few ‘buy on sight’ labels still around and they promise to dig deep in the dubplate box for this one-off occasion!
On microphone duties and joining them in the arena we’ve pulled out all the stops and called in the likes of the legendary sweet voice out of Jamaica, EARL 16! Starting his career in the mid 70’s Earl has recorded with some of the best; including Lee Perry, Joe Gibbs and Mad Professor, to name but a few. One of the most consistent singers in Reggae, it really is a huge treat to have Earl on this bill. He will be together with MC TROOPER who hails from the original Twelve Tribes Sounds, Jah Revelation, lyrical fire! Teaming up with Tuff Scout is the mighty REALITY SOULJAHs, whose unique combination as a duo has led to them recording with some of the best contemporary roots producers around, as well as being regulars on the European Soundsystem circuit, performing with the likes of Blackboard Jungle out of France.
Of course there has to be a soundsystem or it wouldn’t be Teachings in Dub! All acts will be performing live and direct on the mighty KIBIR LA AMLAK who will once again bring their beautiful hand built soundsystem into the Trinity Centre and shake the very foundations with Jah music. Blessing the mic for them will be the up and coming MULU whose performances on the sound have built her an instant name as the new roots daughter in town. Joining her will be the righteous sounds of DONOVAN KINGJAY who has been making big strides recently with some heavyweight releases and of course nicing up the dance very often with the great Channel One.

This will be a night of top quality roots music and a wonderful way to round off the year!
we look forward to seeing you all on the 12th of December.
Catch you there,

Teachings In Dub King Earthquake vs Maasai Warrior Apr 25, 2014
King Earthquake at Teachings in Dub, Bristol – 29/1/10
Resonators: Continuing to turn heads at every corner, Resonators have just dropped a Deluxe Edition of their latest album “The Constant” which features a mammoth collection of previously unreleased dub versions and bonus remixes. Brought together by their love of dub, Resonators have spent the past 8 years refining their own sound. Founded on a roots reggae tradition, the music also reflects the subtleties of it’s 9 members’ diverse musical influences, making them true advocates for the evolving sound of dub. With dual vocal powerhouse Faye Houston and Kassia Zermon (aka Bunty) fronting the group, their repertoire ranges from sweet and soulful, to the more deep and progressive elements of contemporary dance music.
Stryda: Stryda is one half of Dubkasm who release top-quality productions on their Sufferah’s Choice Recordings Label. Such as the anthem of 2014 Victory! He is responsible for bringing many of the top soundsystems and stage shows to Bristol, always ramming Trinity at his Teachings In Dub events. He is one of Bristol’s ambassadors for roots reggae.
Solo Banton: Solo was immediately recognised for his vintage deejay style and intelligent (often comical) lyrical content, and soon found himself in great demand for his talents, working with the likes of Jahtari, Maffi, Mungos Hifi, Zion Gate Hifi and many other sounds & labels worldwide
Lionpulse Sound: Lionpulse has jumped on to the scene in the last few years with their packed out launch party here at Trinity. Their beautiful Soundsystem has gained recognition from many around the UK and further and have worked with artists such as Sleepy Time Ghost on Unit 137. They continue to push things forward and we are glad to have these bois on board.
Sasha Steppa: Bristol based selecta. Specialising in Reggae and Dub. Sasha has hit the scene running playing along side many big acts such as Congo Natty / Smith & Mighty / DJ Krust amongst many more. With intelligent sets that will keep you skanking.
Henry & Louis (2 Kings) – The label has always put reggae production at its heart, though the sound is not a conventional dub sound. Our approach has been to express a Roots & Culture philosophy first and foremost and sometimes that sounds very much aligned with the UK Roots scene, but other tracks pull in wider influences from Dubstep to Trip-Hop. The feeling comes first and the sound follows – that’s how we roll
Bliss Zion– A young singer, songwriter & producer from Bristol. She has recently released a track with on the Maasai Warrior label ‘Freedom Outta Babylon’ and with the likes of Iration Steppas, King Alpha, Roots Injection & Jah Lokko running her productions she is definitely one to keep an eye out for.
